Course Description: Adolescence is defined as a complex adjustment to the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Difficulties in gender identity development emerge at various times through the life cycle and often in the context of broader identity confusion and psychological distress. The study aimed to develop an understanding of young people who presented with gender dysphoria (GD) emerging in adolescence, and who, during the assessment, ceased wishing to pursue medical interventions and/or no longer felt that their gender identity was incongruent with their biological sex.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the purpose of the study and the methods related to young people with GD emerging in adolescence
  2. Analyze the data by exploring the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings
  3. Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research

Course Outline:

  1. Read and understand ‘Taking the lid off the box’: The value of extended clinical assessment for adolescents presenting with gender identity difficulties
  2. Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  3. Consider the factors related to adolescents with GD coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
  4. Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  5. Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand extended assessments of young people with GD
