The AATBS Certification for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Specialist is a self-paced home-study course that provides 37 hours of instruction. This program presents a review of the core tenets underlying cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and examples of how these techniques are applied in different settings. This course first provides an overview of the basic principles associated with CBT and discusses its effectiveness in the treatment of various disorders. Next, this course includes a leading text by Judith S. Beck for learning the fundamentals of CBT which explains how to engage patients, develop a sound case conceptualization, plan treatment, and structure sessions. Furthermore, ways to identify, evaluate, and respond to automatic thoughts; modify underlying assumptions and core beliefs; and deliver behavioral and experiential interventions are addressed. Dr. Steven M. Sultanoff then presents a recorded CBT course (combining audio with PowerPoint) based on a workshop presentation which discusses the practical application of this model. Finally, a discussion of the use of CBT for three different applications is provided: (1) PTSD; (2) anger management (including a participant workbook); and (3) trauma-focused.
