This course will review the major evidence-based interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors targeting youth populations. The researchers classify the efficacy of interventions using a five-tier system based on the strength of clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the interventions. In addition, common treatment modalities and future research and practice recommendations are presented.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Compare and contrast the risk factors and characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal self-injury
  2. List the efficacy of various psychosocial interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors using the five levels of treatment efficacy
  3. Summarize the efficacious treatment components identified across interventions

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Evidence base update of psychosocial treatments for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in youth
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Reflect on the efficacy of various psychosocial treatment strategies to address self-harming and suicide risk among youths
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches for reducing youths’ self-injury and suicide
