Bio: Pam has a private practice in West Los Angeles and Encino specializing in social skills groups, family issues, children and adolescents, grief support, and parenting. Her extensive experience as a special education teacher and pre-school director makes her an ideal instructor. She has been working as a private GGS tutor since becoming licensed in 2005. Pam has received her doctorate as a Clinical Psychologist.

Course Description:

Domestic occurs in every country, culture and age group. It affects people of all socioeconomic levels, religious affiliations, and educational backgrounds. The impact of domestic violence is far-reaching and invasive, impacting families, children and the community. In this presentation, we will set forth the components of domestic violence and the difficulties associated with assessing and treating it. Treatment approaches, safety planning, appropriateness of individual and conjoint sessions, and the therapist stance are discussed.  We  review ways to help couples communicate more effectively early in their relationship; address the issues which lead to angry and violent outbursts; place responsibility where it belongs to decrease the likelihood of intimate partner abuse and increase the probability of an equitable and cohesive relationship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the far-reaching effects of this problem on families, including the link between domestic violence and child abuse.
  2. Know the signs of a battering relationship and the use of battering as a means of control.
  3. Utilize interventions, counseling skills, and ongoing issues that are related to couples and families of domestic violence.
  4. Use crisis management and safety planning protocols.
