Course Description: Eating disorders (EDs) represent a significant public health problem and are associated with substantial psychological comorbidity, significant medical complications, elevated mortality rates, and role impairment. Moreover, food insecurity (FI) is associated with increased intentional dietary restraint. The current study aimed to replicate recent findings showing an association between the severity of FI and increased ED pathology. Researchers found that participants in the most severe FI group reported significantly high levels of ED pathology, dietary restraint, anxiety, and depression. Creating a less stereotypical portrait of those at risk for developing an ED is suggested.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the purpose of the study and the methods related to food insecurity (FI) and eating disorder (ED) pathology as examined in the article
- Analyze the data by exploring the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings
- Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research
Course Outline:
- Read and understand Eating Disorder Pathology Among Individuals Living With Food Insecurity: A Replication Study
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to FI coupled with the statistical findings from the referenced article
- Complete the post-test questions; keep in mind that answers should be derived from the accompanying article
- Return to the article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the relationship between FI, marginalized populations, and ED pathology
