In Order to Become a Licensed MFT

In order to become a licensed marriage and family therapist. First you must have a degree in psychology or a related field such as social work. You must also complete the academic coursework required by your state board of examiners.

The mft exam is a three part test mft candidates must pass in order to become licensed. If you want to be a marriage and family therapist your mft license is the first step.

  1. Earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, human services or a related field.
  2. Earn your master’s degree. Specialize your skills through a masters degree.
  3. Complete supervised work experience. (In total you will need 200-hrs of supervised work experience).
  4. Earn your license. (Pass the mft exam and all of the requirements given within your state of licensure.)
