What does it take to obtain the BCBA credential?

If you want to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, there are several requirements you must complete before registering for the BCBA exam. First, you must have completed a graduate degree in psychology, special education or another related field. Additionally, you must complete one of two supervised fieldwork options. The two supervised fieldwork options are Supervised Fieldwork and Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Supervised Fieldwork requires supervisees to complete 2000 total experience hours and receive supervision for a minimum of five percent of experience hours per month. Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork requires supervisees to complete 1500 total experience hours and receive supervision for a minimum of 10 percent of their experience hours per month.

Where do you find a BCBA supervisor?

In order to get supervision hours, you will need to find a BACB approved BCBA who will serve as your supervisor. Supervisors do not need to be fellow graduates of the same program. People often choose their supervisors based on location, availability, and scope of practice.

Some graduate programs offer their students support in finding BCBA supervisors. Other individuals may be able to find supervisors through their employer. Additionally, individuals can look through the BACB registry to find and contact BCBAs who are approved and available to supervise.

Once you have found a supervisor who is approved to supervise and available to begin supervising your hours, you will both sign a supervision contract clearly delineating the supervision experience and its requirements.
