Emotional intimacy (EI) promotes sexual desire (SD) and sexual contact (SC) in long-term romantic relationships. However, it is unclear whether this effect is direct or indirect, via its impact on SD. This study tested the mediating role of SD between EI and SC and gender, using experience sampling in the participant’s natural environment. Only an indirect effect was found, which diminished over time. The strength of the EI and SD association was similar between the genders. This suggests that among long-term romantic partners, EI increases SD thereby increasing the odds of SC, with a similar temporal association across genders.
