Course Description: Minority stress processes can affect people at the individual level and the couple level. The authors conducted a quantitative study using data from 100 cohabitating, same-sex couples in the US. The authors collected data on individual-level stigma, couple-level stigma, mental health, psychological distress, and problematic drinking. The authors found that couple-level minority stresses are associated with well-being over and above the influence of individual-level minority stresses. The authors emphasize the importance of dyadic data to understand minority stresses in couples. Future research may explore couple-level minority stresses over time.
