Course Description: Physical activity (PA) can be therapeutic for individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) who generally have low PA and experience numerous lifestyle-related medical complications. Those with SMI are at increased risk of various physical comorbidities, such as respiratory disease, poor bone health, and cardiovascular disease. The current study conducted a meta-review of PA interventions and their impact on health outcomes for people with SMI, including schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD). Researchers found that PA leads to improved depressive symptoms in MDD as well as improved cognition in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the 3 aims of the study and the methods related to using PA as a treatment for SMI as examined in the article
- Analyze the data by exploring the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings
- Integrate the 10 research recommendations with the identified areas recommended for clinical practice
Course Outline:
- Read and understand EPA guidance on physical activity as a treatment for severe mental illness: a meta-review of the evidence and Position Statement from the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), supported by the International Organization of Physical Therapists in Mental Health (IOPTMH)
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to the benefits of PA for SMI coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
