Course Description: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder exhibiting lifelong deficits in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities. While pharmacological treatments for autism are lacking, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has recently been suggested due to potential therapeutic value. In the current study, meta-analyses showed a significant but moderate effect on repetitive and stereotypes behaviors, social behavior, and the number of errors in executive functioning tasks. Overall, existing evidence supports that TMS could be useful to treat some dimensions of ASD.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the purpose of the study and the methods related to treating ASD as examined in the article
- Analyze the data by exploring the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings
- Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research
Course Outline:
- Read and understand Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to the use of rTMS to treat the core symptoms of ASD coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
- Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand providing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to treat ASD
