Course Description

A three-unit academic course (45 hours) that meets the California LPCC licensure requirements for master’s level core course in research and evaluation.

The course covers:

  • Research methods and statistical analysis
  • Use of research to inform evidence-based practice
  • Importance of research in advancing the profession of counseling
  • Statistical methods used in conducting research, needs assessment, and program evaluation

To cover the required material efficiently and effectively the course is organized into several streams of activity as follows: 

Organization of the Course:

The course consists primarily of readings and two examinations. It is an open entry/open exit class -- that is, students can start and finish at their own pace.

  1. Exams: The first exam comes about half-way through the course and can be done open-book and then submitted. The second will be a final exam, also open-book.
  2. Grading: This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

Course textbook: Heppner, P. P., Kivlighan, D. M., Jr., & Wampold, B. E., "Research Design in Counseling." The textbook is NOT included in the cost of the course. Copies of the book are available at several booksellers (i.e., Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.)

This course meets the pre-licensure requirements of CA SB 788 (the LPCC licensure bill), is APA-accredited, and meets the LPCC licensure requirements for master's level core course in this area.

Since this course is from Alliant University, all coursework will be completed on Alliant's course website. You will receive certificate of completion directly from Alliant. This course is not approved for APA, NBCC or ASWB-ACE credit through AATBS.
