Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) youth have higher rates of depression and suicidality than their heterosexual peers. Minority stress theory posits that LGBQ individuals experience typical stressors as well as stressors unique to their sexual orientation. A review of 35 studies on depression among LGBQ youth published since 2000 was conducted. Internalized LGBQ-related oppression, bullying, and experiencing harassment and discrimination were prominent risk factors for depression. Self-esteem and friend support were protective factors against depression. The authors note the importance of addressing the mental health of LGBQ youth. Future research may investigate risk and protective factors for depression using more advanced methodology such as longitudinal designs, and investigate within-group differences within LGBQ youth.
