Sexual assault (SA) is a common and extremely harmful form of trauma that is linked to specific mental health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, and more likely to impact certain demographic subgroups, such as females. The goal of this course is to describe the relationship between SA and multiple forms of psychopathology, assess the strengths and limitations of existing research on SA exposure and psychopathology, and determine factors that might moderate the relationship between SA and experiences of psychopathology. The research to date also sheds light on the causal attribution of SA in psychopathology and recommendations to improve the assessment and definition of SA in research and practice.

  1. Describe the prevalence of sexual assault victimization
  2. Identify inconsistencies in the operationalization and assessment of sexual assault that can impact research findings on their mental health effects
  3. List three moderating variables that might account for differences in the relationship between sexual assault and psychopathology in different populations
  4. Summarize the strengths and limitations of existing research on the role of sexual assault on the development of psychopathology

  • Read and understand Sexual assault victimization and psychopathology: A review and meta-analysis
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Reflect on the study specific and individual characteristics that might impact the relationship between sexual assault and psychopathology
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand populations that might be vulnerable to psychopathology following sexual assault and the types of mental health conditions commonly reported by sexual assault victims
