Sleep problems are relatively common across the life span. Data indicate that a significant proportion of individuals worldwide suffer from some form of sleep difficulties. Efforts are needed both to identify factors that increase the risk for the development of poor sleep and to better understand adverse outcomes to which sleep problems may contribute. The study aimed to evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between various forms of sleep problems and loneliness. Researchers' results support an association between more severe sleep problems and greater perceptions of loneliness.

Course Description: Sleep problems are relatively common across the life span. Data indicate that a significant proportion of individuals worldwide suffer from some form of sleep difficulties. Efforts are needed both to identify factors that increase the risk for the development of poor sleep and to better understand adverse outcomes to which sleep problems may contribute. The study aimed to evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between various forms of sleep problems and loneliness. Researchers' results support an association between more severe sleep problems and greater perceptions of loneliness.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the 3 aims of the study and the methods related to sleep problems and loneliness as examined in the article

  2. Analyze the data by exploring the 84 articles identified for inclusion in conjunction with the discussed findings

  3. Integrate the 6 study limitations with the identified areas of future research

  4. Generalize the possibility and/or plausibility of applying the statistical findings with the 29 distinct indices of sleep problems and the 22 distinct indices of loneliness  

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand A Meta-Analysis of the Relationship Between Sleep Problems and Loneliness

  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives

  • Consider the factors related to sleep problems, loneliness, and specific sleep complaints coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article

  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article

  • Return to the article for clarification regarding the interplay between sleep problems and loneliness, or for any missed questions
