Young people who identify as LGBTQ, referred to in the current paper as “the sexual minority youth”, are often at a higher risk for substance use and negative health outcomes compared to their heterosexual peers.  However, most of the current evidence on adolescent substance use has been compiled in the United States, only.  The current study tracks teens from eight different European countries in both same and opposite gender-attracted categories to evaluate the risk levels of substance use.  The results show that LGBTQ individuals have a significantly higher propensity for substance use across multiple drug types, which is in line with previous research.

  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article to better understand the relationship between alcohol/drug use in adolescence and sexual attraction
