Course Description: Puppy play is a form of roleplay in which adult humans take on puppies' characteristics within the BDSM community.  The researchers conducted a phenomenological study of puppy play with the "puppies" and or the handlers.  The researchers sought to provide additional information about what it means to engage in puppy play. The themes identified in the study are sexual pleasure, relaxation therapy, and escape from self, adult play and vibrant physicality, extending and expressing selfhood, and relationship and community. The perceived benefits of puppy play have been likened to mindfulness. The study is beneficial to skilled providers working with the BDSM community to understand reasons for engaging in puppy play.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the two psychological aspects of puppy play identified in the study
  2. Evaluate the three responses of the participants as related to the results of the study
  3. Identify the five themes of puppy play as they relate to the reason participants engage in puppy play

Course Outline:

  1. Read and understand the article, The psychology of puppy play: A phenomenological investigation
  2. Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  3. Work through the post-test questions; the answers to the questions should be derived from the respective article
  4. Review the article for further clarification, if needed.
  5. Return to the article for clarification regarding the psychology of puppy play, or for any missed questions
