Course By: Rachel Schoor, Ph.D.

Content By: Kousteni, I., & Anagnostopoulos, F. (2019). Same sex psychological interventions: A systematic review. Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy, 19(2), 136-174. https://doi.org/10.1080/15332691.2019.1667937

Course Description: Same-sex couples (SSC) have become increasingly recognized both socially and legally. Despite research regarding LGBTQ+ individuals’ mental health, there has been limited focus on interventions for SSC. The aim of the review investigates whether there are empirical quantitative studies evaluating the outcome of psychological interventions specifically delivered to SSCs. Overall, researchers found affirmative outcomes were related to high satisfaction with interventions and improvements on multiple variables such as health-related behaviors, relationship enhancement, and drug/alcohol abuse.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the 1 aim of the review and the methods related to the interventions for SSC as examined in the article
  2. Analyze the data by exploring the 3 psychoeducational and 2 psychotherapeutic interventions used in conjunction with the discussed findings
  3. Integrate the 3 overall study limitations with the 2 identified areas of future research
  4. Generalize the possibility and/or plausibility of applying the 1 NICE checklist to assess the methodological quality of SSC studies selected from other databases

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Same-Sex Couples’ Psychological Interventions: A Systematic Review
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider the factors related to psychotherapy and psychoeducational interventions for SSC coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand interventions for SSC, or for any missed questions
