Course Description:Â This course is a presentation of theory and research that is tailored to contemporary practice and training requirements, with an emphasis on the identification and development of specific competencies in both trainees and their supervisors. The authors have geared this integrative approach to mental health professionals who currently provide supervision in academic, training, and treatment settings as well as students and practitioners who are studying supervision research and theory for the first time. This course provides guidance on both clinical and supervisory competencies and accounts for recent legislative initiatives mandating training in supervision.
Learning Objectives:
- Review a competency-based model of clinical supervision supported by an examination of the theoretical and empirical literature.
- Review the following topics: effective practices in supervision, technical competence, personal factors, therapeutic and supervisory alliance, diversity competence, ethical and legal responsibilities and case management, and evaluation.
- Review the interaction between competencies enacted within supervision and within the clinical setting.
- Review examples from both supervision and clinical practice to illustrate the importance of competency in both settings.
