NCMHCE Exam Practice Tests

The new format of the NCMHCE exam includes 11 individual case studies, 10 of which are scored. Each case study is a clinical narrative that represents commonly encountered presenting concerns broken down into 13 multiple-choice questions each with 4 options and only 1 correct answer (3 of these 13 questions are unscored). This exam format differs greatly from the previous version. Candidates will be given the client's diagnosis at the start of each case. The current format of the exam is designed to focus less on diagnosis and assessment and more on clinical skills and proficiency in competent clinical decision-making. Our revised practice tests are specifically designed to assist you in your preparation in order to pass the NCMHCE exam on your first try.

Unlike the NCE, where responses often rely on rote memorization, the NCMHCE primarily assesses application and higher cognitive levels of knowledge. This ensures candidates demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills essential for competent counseling. The NCMHCE exam measures the ability to apply knowledge of theoretical and skill-based tenets through response to clinical case simulations. These simulations are designed to capture an examinee’s ability to identify, analyze, diagnose, and develop plans for the treatment of clinical concerns. There will be no Areas of Clinical Focus questions because this information will be provided to candidates in the case studies.
