To Become a Licensed Psychologist

In order to become a licensed psychologist, you must first complete a bachelor's degree, either in psychology or another social science. Then you will need to earn a graduate degree in psychology. Most programs require you to earn a masters in psychology first, and then obtain your doctorate in psychology.

After completing your doctoral degree you will need to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, or EPPP. You will also need to complete 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience. Once this is completed, you are eligible to apply for licensure through your state board of psychology, which has its own unique, additional requirements, (e.g. specific education courses, additional paperwork, jurisprudence exam, etc.).

Also of note: each state has a different timeline in which you can obtain these requirements. For example, some states do not allow candidates to take the EPPP until a certain number of hours have been completed, while other states allow candidates to take the EPPP during the training process.
