Course Description: High relapse rates following substance misuse treatments highlight the need for effective therapies. Despite growing research, few reviews have examined this topic. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, which collectively evaluated the methodological characteristics and findings of studies evaluating mindfulness interventions for substance misuse. The meta-analysis results revealed improved outcomes regarding the frequency and severity of substance misuse, intensity of cravings for psychoactive substances, severity of stress, and cigarette smoking. Mindfulness treatments appear to be a promising treatment for substance misuse. However, more research is needed regarding the treatment’s mechanisms and effects in diverse treatment settings.
