Content By: de AlarcĂ³n, R., de la Iglesia, J. I., Casado, N. M., & Montejo, A. L. (2019). Online porn addiction: What we know and what we don’t – A systematic review. Journal of Clinical Medicine, 8(1), 1-21. https://doi.org/10.3390/jcm8010091

Course Description: There is an existing common neurobiological and environmental ground between the varying addictive disorders, including both substance abuse and addictive behavior. Despite increasing research regarding online pornography addiction, little guidance exists to discern pathological from non-pathological use. The study aimed to gather existing knowledge on problematic online pornography use as a pathological entity and to summarize what is known about the entity and outline areas of further research. Researchers suggest that treatment strategies focus on mindfulness and acceptance-based psychotherapy, each being equally or more important than a pharmacological approach.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the purpose of the study and the methods related to online pornography addiction as examined in the article
  2. Analyze the data by reviewing the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings
  3. Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Online Porn Addiction: What We Know and What We Don’t – A Systematic Review
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider the factors related to behavioral addictions coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the literature regarding problematic online pornography use and suggested treatment interventions
