As you embark on your journey to become a licensed counselor, the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) is a pivotal step toward achieving your goals. The Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) and the NBCC Assessments Team have recently announced upcoming changes to the CPCE exam format.

Starting with exams offered in January 2024, 50% of the questions will be presented in a 3-response–option multiple-choice format, while the remaining 50% will retain the familiar 4-response–option format. This shift is based on extensive research supporting the psychometric advantages of the 3-response format. As a candidate, it's crucial to adapt your preparation strategy to accommodate this change.

Here's a quick overview of what this means for you:

  • Mixed Question Formats: Be prepared to face a mix of 3-response and 4-response multiple-choice questions in your upcoming exam. The integration of both formats aims to enhance the overall testing experience and align with industry standards.
  • Equal Effort for All Questions: Since candidates won't know which questions are scored or unscored, it's vital to approach each item with equal effort. This ensures that you maximize your performance across all question types.
  • Delayed Score Reports: Unlike previous exams, candidates who test in January will need to exercise a bit of patience. Unofficial score reports will not be available immediately after testing. Expect your results to be released in mid-February.
  • Performance Evaluation: The assessment team will evaluate item performance at the end of January to determine which questions will be scored and unscored. This evaluation process aims to maintain the integrity and reliability of the CPCE.
  • Further Changes on the Horizon: This new format is not set in stone. The CCE will continue to monitor and assess the effectiveness of this approach, with any necessary adjustments announced before the August 2024 publication.

As you gear up for your exam, stay tuned for more insights and tips to help you navigate these changes successfully. Remember, preparation is the key to success, and AATBS is here to support you every step of the way. Good luck!
