The Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP) is a comprehensive test that assesses the knowledge and skills of aspiring psychologists. The exam is divided into two parts, and part 2 of the EPPP covers the skills portion of the exam. There are six total content areas on the EPPP Part 2.  In this article, we will explore the Scientific Orientation content area of the EPPP part 2 in more detail. This content area accounts for 6% of the exam.

This section of the test evaluates a candidate's application of the knowledge developed through the science of psychology. This content area will test a candidate on understanding evidence-based practice and responding to psychological problems using the research.

This content area is important because it ensures that licensed psychologists have a thorough understanding of the scientific methods used in psychology and are able to apply them appropriately in their work. It also helps to ensure that psychologists are able to critically evaluate and interpret research findings and can use this information to inform their clinical practice.

The scientific orientation content area includes questions on topics such as:

  • Critical evaluation and application of research findings
  • Acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in accordance with scientific and ethical principles
  • Selecting and critically reviewing relevant research materials
  • Sharing psychological knowledge with diverse groups in an unbiased manner
  • Critically evaluating relevant literature
  • Interpreting and communicating empirical research results.

Candidates should also be familiar with key theories and concepts in psychology, as well as the scientific basis for practice.

Studying for this content area may involve reviewing research, findings, and literature and then learning to critique and then disseminate that information to other professionals.  Candidates should also be able to apply findings and knowledge to address the psychological problems psychologists face. It may also involve practicing analyzing research articles and critiquing research designs.

Overall, the scientific orientation content area is an important part of the EPPP Part 2 and helps to ensure that licensed psychologists have a solid understanding of the scientific foundations of the field.
